1998 Burrowing Owl and 1999 Azelia

1998 Burrowing Owl Cabernet Sauvignon - from the most successful vintage BC has yet seen, this cab is quite dark with a high-toned nose showing a definite mint note. The entry is sweet, and it has a full feel to it,. It is well balanced and has enough acidity to finish cleanly. Good now and may improve a bit more - it will certainly hold a few years. One of the best reds I've seen from BC so far. Very hard to find as the production is small and almost all of it goes to small stores and restaurants.

Also tasted today - 1999 Azelia Barbera d'Alba Vigna Punta - a new age Barbera without the terminal acidity of the traditional style, but with more fruit at the beginning. Well made and enjoyable now and for the next few years.

I suppose living near the source does have some advantages. Part of the smal production of Burrowing Owl that goes to small stores and restaurants makes its way to a nice establishment near to where I live. The restaurant owner is a wine lover himself and marks up the '98 Cabernet by only 50% !!! It is indeed inky black and very well balanced. mt
