2003 Domaine Serene Monogram Oregon PN

I recently was sent a bottle of 2003 Domaine Serene Monogram Oregon PN (disclaimer...I sell Domiane Serene). This is a wine sold only through the winery at $200 and I normally wouldn't post a review for a wine like this but since they only make 100 cases I thought I would post a review for those who might have an interest in the wine.

The wine is very, very, dark almost inky purple. They use Dijon clone pinot noir which tends toward black fruit notes. The wine was unapproachable for the first two hours with very little nose and a huge tannic flavor profile. Not so much extracted as tannic. After two hours the wine had softened a bit showing an aroma of blueberry and vanilla with a distinct rocky minerality. The flavor was vaugely pinot noir with blackberry, blueberry, cassis, kirsch, anise and espresso flavors. Still very tannic on the finish. I would guess that it will take at least another 5-8 years for the wine to mature and soften a bit. My concern would be that the fruit would fade before the tannins.

Interesting note, Bill. What are the odds that you would have guessed PN in a blind tasting? This sounds like many of the PNs coming from the CA Central Coast regions (Clos Pepe, anyone?).

It's funny you asked that question Mark because the consensus amongst us (there were six tasters) was that none of us would have been able to identify it as a PN in a blind tasting. Most of us felt that it would be guessed as a "new style" Old World wine from Italy or Spain. I thought it reminded me of Nero d'Avola or Syrah made in the new style.

I have had older Domaine Serene's from the same vineyards and it took

5-7 years but was great with no fruit fade. That being said it isn't worth $200.
