2004 Ramonet and 1998 Lafite

Met friends for dinner last night for a 30th anniversary dinner (theirs not mine...I'm working on 38). I brought a 2004 Ramonet Batard Montrachet and another guest brought a 1998 Chateau Lafite. The Ramonet had typical toasted oak nose. Ramonet seems to push the envelope on toasting their barrels to the point that they seem almost smokey to me at times. Black earth aromas and a bit of floral notes on the nose. Farily muscular on the palate, lemon custard and limestone. Needs some time but with premox I don't want to push it too far these days. The 1998 Chateau Lafite was opened about two hours before it was poured. Cedary cassis and tobacco on the nose with a whiff of barnyard. Sweet black fruits, very elegant and balanced with plenty of ripe tannins. "A"
