Nils, When you described the flavours of the dessert, I immediately thought of a stronger fortified wine. I've had some very rich dessert items with savoury (nearly bitter) elements pair nicely with either port, sherry or the Aussie fortifieds. The RL Buller Premium Fine Muscat and Tokay (both are about $12-14 for a half-bottle in the US) from Rutherglen are both excellent values worth trying out, or you could always go for something like a Madeira, rather than a VT or botrytised wine with such a different flavour profile to what you described.
Cheers,
Salil

Think you're right. Might try a Moscatel de Setubal next time (Rutherglen Muscats are hard to come by here).
Cheers
