Good wines this week

Following my infanticide of the `95 Haut-Brion, this week has been a good one.

2000 Bonny Doon's Le Cigar Volant: don't remember the cost, but this is a fine Chateauneuf du Pape style (39% grenache, 32% mouvedre, 1% viognier, and I forget the other) wine. Stylistically correct, robust aroma of dried fruit such as prune, raisins, traditional earthy, warm, peppery taste, smooth tannins. Also don't recall the price.

2000 Chateau Plantey - Pauillac: $23US - this was not as described by the wine store owner, which was supposed to be like a little Mouton (I skipped Mouton's second label "Clerc" I believe it was named, didn't want to spend $60 at the time) but was more like a Forest Glenn merlot. Smooth, round, fleshy, juicy, it was okay, but not worth it for a Bordeaux esp. with the expectations I had for a Pauillac. I still think the Le Fiefs de Lagrange from St. Julien is the best "cheap" Bordeaux.

2002 Domaine du Tremblay Quincy: $16US - this was just as she (wine store owner) described, and as I like in a sauvignon blanc: light, acidy, crispy, and minerally with a sweet finish (moreso than I usually like actually). Lots of apple, pear and touch of cinnamon. Very similar to my favorite 2002 Geyser Peak s.b.

I don't recall specific amounts, but sure there's some syrah and maybe cinsault in there

I too generally like Les Fiefs, though 1995 is only one I'm holding. For Medocs in same general price range, you might try Gloria, Lynch-Moussas, de Pez. Other second wines that I liked in 2000 (haven't tried Les Fiefs) were La Dame de Montrose and Haut-Bages-Averous (second of Lynch-Bages).

Thanks for notes, might look for that Quincy. Dale

I just had this in a sauvignon blanc tasting. It was my second favorite. It is indeed sweet, with a little bit of perfume. I didn't believe it was

100% sauvignon blanc, but we looked it up and it is. It is definitely not a traditionally-styled French sauvignon blanc, but I thought it was tasty.

I've never had a French sauvignon blanc like this one. The appellation is near Sancerres in the Loire. The appellation is described as making "crisp and tart wines with a somewhat grassy characteristic." The wine most like it in the tasting was my favorite, which was Crocker Starr from Napa. It was acidic, but also fruity with perfume on the nose. There was no mineral or grass taste like most French sauvignon blancs. I am not too familiar with the appellation, although I will say that you paid more for this wine than my wine shop was charging (which was about $12).

Quincy IMVVHO is generally closest to the Sancerre style, but sometimes with an almost NZ-like gooseberry flavor.

Of course, all of these are generalities, as there are ethereal Pouilly-Fumes, full-bodied Sancerres, SB only white Bordeaux, etc. :) Dale

I just tasted the 2000 Les Fiefs and it shows excellent fruit and a terrific structure. The price in Ohio is $21.99. Bi!!
