Graham Maldevos 1996

I saw in Costco a bottle of Maldevos port 1996 (bottled in 1998) and wondered if it is worth the price of US $33.

I've had Warre's Warrior Port at about half the price and wondering if the Maldevos is worth the difference in price IYO. Thanks. Dee

Yes it is!

A vintage Port from a year not generally declared by Grahams as a vintage for the grand vin, the Malvedos can be very good and much better than the Warrior.

I have 82, 86, 88, 90, 92 and 95 still in my cellar (finished the older ones) I'd grab some and try it and if you like it, lay away a half dozen for future years, although it should drink well quite young.

Dee,

I'll have to see if my "wine-guy" at Costco can score some of the Malvedos, especially at that price. When they have had previous bottlings, I've usually picked up six, or so bottles, as the price is very good.

In general terms, this Port comes exclusively from Graham's Quinta dos Malvados, and, as Bill S. points out, is bottled in excellent years that are not declared a "vintage." The non-declaration of a vintage, can be purely monetary, or can reflect a poor year. You will not see a Quinta dos Malvedos in anthing but an excellent year, that was just not declared as a vintage year.

These wines usually offer their fullest in less time that a traditional Graham's Vintage and also a real cost savings over a true vintage year. I find these far smoother, and far more complex than the "branded" Warrior (Warre's), or Six Grape (Graham). It will also improve with time in the bottle (by most tasters' standards).

Thanks, Bill and Hunt. I bought a bottle and like it. I probably wouldn't have without your encouragement. I will be buying another (or so). Dee

Dee,

The best part of all of this is your line, "I bought a bottle and LIKE [edited for emphasis] it." That is what the enjoyment of wine is all about. Thank you for taking the time to do a followup. I almost missed the article, as I usually only open the latest 250 headers, so I saw this one only as a reply, with none of the original articles above - it all depends on one's news reader, and how they use it, and have it configured. Maybe I should do an " All" on the headers at least once per week.
