Greek wines are a JOKE

Even the Turks have at least one Master of Wine in the form of Mr Ali Diren

Greeks make something called retsina from gum-cleaner, pine needles and parrafin

They make a vile Brandy called Metaxa and disgusting liquor called Ouzo

The Cyp Griks brew a half reasonable beer but you need 14 of them to get you slightly merry

Pardon this intrusion from a newbie.

My husband remarked tonight about a delightful dinner he once had at a Greek restaurant and that they served a red Greek wine that *smelled* like vanilla?

Any guesses what that might have been? I might have to track down a bottle or two for Christmas.

Unfortunately, almost any wine that has been aged in new oak barrels will smell like vanilla to some extent, so identifying a particular wine for your husband would be nigh unto impossible. If you'd just like to get him a wine that smells like vanilla, nothing could be easier: go to your favorite wine/liquor store and look for a bottle of California Merlot or Pinot Noir. If you want to get him a Greek wine for nostalgia's sake, the only advice I can offer is to avoid Retsina like the plague.
