Haras - Chilean wine

Haras Character, Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, Maipo Valley, Chili, bought at Costco April 2009 $17.99, 14.5% alcohol.

Tasted of turpentine or kerosine, or a mixture of both. I really couldn't tell what I was drinking. Phew! I'm not to fond of 14.5% alcohol, but this was pretty darned strong.

Has anyone bought this and liked it? Just curious.

I did buy at Costco a 2005 Maipo Valley May 2007 $14.99, Smart Buy WS. "Lips purple."

I did buy at Costco an Aconcagu Valley Chili 2005 , 52% Cabernet, 35% Merlot, 10% Cab Franc, 3% Petit Verdot in August 2007 $18.99 and noted that we liked it.

But I think I'll stay away from Chilean wine for a while, specifically, too, I don't think I would spend more than $20 for a bottle of Chiliean wine.

I haven't tried these particular wines you mention, but I've noticed an interesting regularity WRT cheap wines. For some reason, I don't like cheap wines (on the American market) that come from Pacific Ocean facing regions. I have yet to find a cheap California wine that I like. From Chile, the only cheap wine I can drink is the Gato Negro Sauvignon Blanc. (This label sells other kinds of wines too, and they are without exception utterly disgusting plonk. The SB is nothing to write home about either - way to go to reach the NZ ones - but it is a food-friendly quaffing wine.) From Australia the only cheap I can drink is the Yellowtail Shiraz, because it is bitter in addition to being sweet. However, there are lots of cheap and drinkable wines coming from the Atlantic seaboard - beginning with Long Island wines, passing through Argentina, many from Europe (both Western and eastern), and some from South Africa. I'm not mentioning NZ, because I've yet to see cheap wine from there. :)
