Hey Scarpitti - Read this and weep!!!!

NEWSFLASH!!!

A significant vineyard in Marlborough [New Zealand] has been purchased by a noted Italian Wine producer.

The Antinori family, who have with a seven-century history in the wine business, through its company Campo Di Sasso, has purchased 12.7ha, said by locals to be an excellent vine-growing site.

Campo Di Sasso will launch a new sauvignon blanc label from grapes grown on the property.

The new wine will be sold in the United States, Italy and other EU countries.

A spokesman for the family said that Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc was unique, and would find great appeal in Italy.

Brent Marris of the neighbouring Wither Hills winery said the property was on an alluvial shingle plain, with the typical hot days and cold nights.

"What I think is particularly good is that you've got the Old World of wine making, considering Marlborough the very best region for sauvignon blanc."

Oh, what is the world coming to, Michael.

Well, DUH! :^D I figured that out the first time I tasted a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, about 3 or 4 years ago. Pretty much blows away anything I've tasted recently from the USA, although I remember a Chateau St. Jean "Petite Etoille" from ~1978 that was on par with Marlborough. Maybe better.

Just to be fair, I've tasted Italian Sauvignon Blanc that's also world class - however it's neither as distinctive as Marlborough [or Sancerre], nor as inexpensive.

My favorite white from Italy is the Terbbiano di Abruzzo by Valentini. Superb.
