Hogue 2003 Genesis Cabernet Sauvignon

This wine seems to be quite a rage right now. Or maybe I'm misinterpreting what I see on wine.com. It's rated at 94 by Wine News and is apparently the best seller for the time being on wine.com. AND it's relatively inexpensive! Has anyone else out there tried it? I may have to break down and go to the gourmet store and pay full retail price for a bottle just to see what all the hoopla is about. They don't seem to carry it at Costco. :-(

You can find it for between $12-$15 from a variety of sources. The hoopla is about marketing. I tried it at a trade tasting and it reminded me of cough syrup but some folks like that style. It's very thick, fruit forward and oaky. That tends to be Hogues's house style and for many Columbia Valley wines in general. Not my cup of tea.

As I understand it, Genesis is Hogues' upper level label. I have not tasted this particular wine but I didn't care much for the others I tasted. Nothing especially wrong with them -- just nothing special. Do they still have the creepy little dude on the label?
