Hmmm... All I could gather from that trailer is that he likes wine and is in the Ribera del Duero region of Spain. I have no idea what the program would be like based on this trailer, but I suspect that it's shooting for a semi-irreverent look at wine aimed at younger or less knowledgeable consumers. If Jacob's good at it, it might be fun; if he isn't, it'll probably sink. I see that he's written for the WS and I think I may even have read one of his pieces, but that's different from hosting a show. Is he entertaining? Will he give me enough information to keep my attention, or will it be too fluffy? Do you even care what someone with a cellar of several hundred wines thinks? Hard to say.

Hi Duncan,

One word:

Entertaining.

Lengthier version of that word:

I like the personal approach you've taken with the trailer. It has the necessary hooks to interest travel-oriented people who've been looking for an excuse to hop on a plane, though as others have commented, it might not appeal to the more experience wine folk (who would travel their of their own volition, not simply because you went 4-wheeling amongst the vines).

Jacob's personality on-screen reminds me a bit of Jeff Corwin, a guy who knows a lot more than he lets on, and conveys his knowledge through staged scenes as though he's experiencing it all for the first time.. we all know the better, but for the average viewer, it's what is necessary to get attention and keep it for more than 30 seconds. Still, I think you and Jacob are up for a good challenge here.

There are countless travel-related shows that have been produced, and they all follow a certain formula. Lots of "fun factor", flashy music, a smattering of history, a slightly larger dose of touristy "just enough to keep you from getting mugged" trivia, and of course, a hyperactive camera that doesn't know what, where, or how to focus, on any one thing, for more than 1/4 of a second. That's just the average travel show, mind you.

You're focusing on a much more targeted, niche audience here... wine travel. Wine culture. I think a fair question would be: what is your end goal? What is your targeted audience (not the people who will, by de facto, be attracted to your program, but rather, the audience you are currently targeting with this trailer)? What channels, programming, countries, times, etc -- are you targeting?

Don't get me wrong. I think you have a good idea here. Your audience is definitely one on who's on the lower end of the learning curve, but that doesn't preclude you from interesting more experienced wine enthusiasts. For example, I've been through many parts of Spain, touring various wineries and regions, sampling local cuisines and such

-- and yet, at the drop of Jacob's words, "Ribera del Duero", a flood of... appetite... came to mind, as I have enjoyed countless occasions with wines from the region. And like any other good wine lover, all it takes is the mere mention of a name, a label, a brand, a varietal, an appellation -- to get the palate, the interest, going -- and hence, the wallet, the phone call, the airline tickets, etc. :)

I would definitely like to know more, beyond this trailer. I would like to also know a bit more about your marketing plans, the timeframe for the show, other regions you plan on visiting, if you'll delve into local foods and cuisine as well, etc.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

Best regards,

David

Interesting trailer, Duncan. I like they way he is relaxed and pretty "ordinary guy" out to find out more about wine. My one critique is that he may be trying a little too hard to be humorous...let it flow spontaneously.

I just started a site for wine and food lovers in the Philadelphia metro area at

Maybe we can find a way to present your series on our site?

Of course I can't see the movie (requires some modern plugin or other) but this reminds me about Hunt's show ideas. Any movement there, Hunt?

Great start.......a wine lover's envy, to have a TV show about one's passion. Good luck on your venture, I hope to see more.
