Interesting Jon, thanks. Seems to me it's important to be green where we can, but also to look at the overall environmental cost of winemaking, especially where irrigation is involved. This article from the NYT (registration required I believe) has some information

As usual we are greenest when we "think global, buy local" not always that easy where wine is concerned! ;)

One thing is for sure, the French are not particularly eco-friendly in general. Trying to recycle a plastic bag around here is a nightmare.

Thanks Emory, a very interesting article.

Even if progress is slow, the more people become aware of the importance of the effort, the easier progress will be in the future.

Efforts can be made at all levels. Our Men's club at our Temple stages several wine, food and cooking events during the course of the year. This year we made an effort to use only local meats and produce, use recycled or recyclable materials and to make sure leftovers are donated to missions and shelters in a timely manner.

The amount that this effort reduced our carbon footprint is probably negligible, but the awareness it caused among our members and families has led to others adopting this mantra for home use and in other organizations our members belong to.

Regards, Jon
