Lunch question

I'm hosting a small gathering of winos for lunch on Wed and I'm planning a rustic, simple Italian style meal. I'm planning on Spagetti Carbonara for the pasta and was wondering about a wine pairing. I make a simple Carbonara with pancetta then "cooking" the sauce of egg yolk, Parmiggano, Pecorino and black pepper on the hot pasta. Sometimes I grate a little lemon zest on the top to add a little punch. Any Italian suggestions? I'm leaning towards a good Suave but it might lack the richness.

Fruilli is a better match for me and carbonara but I have matched lighter Italian reds as well.

Thanks, I just remembered that I have a few bottles of 2006 Marco Felluga Collio Motamatta (Fruilli) in the cellar that might be a good match.

If I punch it up with the lemon zest I will probably go with the Pieropan Calvarino since it has such a fresh lemony backbone to it. I always think of a squirt of fresh lemon in my mouth when I drink Pieropan Soave. If no lemon I will use the Felluga Collio Motamatta it has a bit more richness.

Parmigiano Reggiano, Friuli !

:-)

I would go for a red, a Barbera was suggested by Dale I think. Despite the egg, it works. In France, a CdR.

Remember to add some of the cooking water to the beaten egg and cheese mix. I'd say malvasia, a dry one, sparkling or not based on your preferences, for its aromatic character and its acidity. For the sparklers I'd search for Acaja from Casali (Scandiano - Reggio Emilia), or the malvasia from Ermete Medici (Calerno - Reggio Emilia), the one from Carra di Casatico (Parma) and the dry malvasia from La Piccola (Montecchio - Reggio Emilia). For the quiet ones, search for dry malvasia wines from La Stoppa, Cardinali (can't remember if they still do a quiet malvasia) and La Tosa, all based in Piacenza.

I'll be in the area thursday and friday for work, I'll probably take a room in Scandiano, there is an osteria I like there.

BTW I went back to Il Tondo in Reggio E. for a quick lunch a couple of weeks ago, very good as always. Also had dinner at Il Pozzo, quite good and a very good wine list.

Could it be the Rostaria in Scandiano? I've never been there, but I'll try it ASAP. BTW, between reggio and scandiano there's a small town called "Bosco di Scandiano", as you enter the town coming from Reggio there's a restaurant on you right, "Ristorante Bosco": it rocks, both with wine and with food. If you happoen there and it's open, give him a try. The price range is abotu the same os "Il Pozzo" but theyr kitchen is a tad above, while theyr wine list is a tad smaller. Very recommended. I'm resting from tomorrow to fridat, I worked during the hottest days of the year BTW... I'll be a lot busy in the evenings, but we could arrange a lunch. If you find the time, you have my number :)

Yes, they have a magnificent wine list, and the prices are in line the wide range they offer, expecially for the many annees of the best wines they store. I sometimes use them as a wineshop while on my way to a dinner. Glad to hear you like Il Tondo, it's a place I like much and it's very at hand for someone arriving from the highway, just on the way for the city. And the chef is a true wine-enthusiast.
