More wine-related humor

Hoo, boy just about says it all. As a scientist....what do you think of the issue of swirling against the molecular nap? LOL!!

Wow! That caused my magnetic dipoles to oscillate wildly. North, south, north, south. I have cousin who thinks like that.

Is this a joke or does he mean it seriously? I've read it a couple of times and I'm still not sure.

Oh, my. This is the proper reaction to reading this article, I think:

Quite serious, apparently. There's a follow-up link at the top of the page, where he relents a bit and concedes that it is not wine "cells" but molecules, or even atoms. A wine atom, now that's a fascinating concept. Mark, what do you think its atomic weight might be? Should we call it 'vinium'?

But seriously, is there even a tiny shred of evidence for the effect, never mind the idiotic explanation? Anybody observe something like that? I sure haven't, but then I don't have a "very educated, albeit big, Italian nose" (sic).

Well, we know that wine is slightly lighter than water, so I think that a wine atom should have a mass of ~17 AMU. Vinium has a nice ring to it, unless one wanted to go Greek, in which case oenogen might work ;-)

I doubt that anyone has taken such claims seriously enough to study them, but I can say that what we know about olfaction would not support such a possible effect since the binding of molecules to oflactory receptors shouldn't be affected by the direction of stirring.

There is. Aurora Australis. I guess fewer people live close to its range, hence it's not as popular.

That was one of the more flabbergasting (among a rich selection of them) statements in that article. Anyone who simply Googles "Southern Lights" or Aurora Australis would know better.

I am in the middle of developing some electromagnetic devices, and I WISH that North was more than SOUTH :-)

In the same vein, let me quote an ad in an airplane magazine for something called a Life Balance Band:

"...contains a hologram which is embedded with negative ions that react positively to re-balance your bio-electric frequencies..." I'll spare you the rest. At 15 GBP on special, I reckon the margin to be 90%.
