Okay, so besides the expensive 2000 Barolos...

Now that the Speculator has bestowed a lofty 100 points on the 2000 Barolo vintage, the prices (never low to begin with) will no doubt rise accordingly. Not to mention the dollar is getting whupped by the Euro.

It occurs to me that, if the barolos themselves were so stunning in

2000, the second and third tier nebbiolos from the area should be pretty darned good, too. At probably 1/3 the price.

Has anybody come across these "lesser" 2000s yet? Any suggestions?

I just think it's strange there's a Vintage of the Century somewhere nearly every year according to the WS experts.

One assumes it will get harder to make this call with more years past to compare to. :-)

I think that part of this is the hype that the producers, or their marketing arms espouse. Looking at history, many regions have had several "vintages of the century," in the same decade.

I realize that this does not address your main question, but I haven't tasted any possible "princes" to the "king," in '00 Nebbiolas.
