Most of these glasses may appear to have a rather small bowl size, but they still work very well for their intended use for very sweet wines such as Tokay Essence, German TBAs, etc. Here one would want only a very small serving of a wine that can exceed 50% residual sugar, especially at the end of a perhaps 16 course meal. People who used such glasses in this era were mostly rich and likely had no interest in the color of the wine. They had plenty of servants to check the wine so that they would not be served anything not up to standard at the table.
