Orphans

Over the years I've developed a habit of keeping the last bottle of any wine that I have in my cellar whether from a case lot or any multiple bottle lot. I put them in a rack that I call my "orphan" rack. Every so often I'll pull a wine at random and it's a hit or miss proposition since I keep the last bottle of "weak" as well as great wines. I was wondering if this was a wierd quirk of mine or do others do the same thing. FWIW, my cellar is a constant

55F with temp and humidity control. Bi!!

I do exactly the same thing but I have always called mine "Lost Souls". I have a bottle from a 1963 case residing in there now. I think my rack has a lot more losers than winners now.

Unless that's a vintage port, it's probably dead as a doornail. :^(

  • I suspect that quite a few people do as you do (and as I do!)

For some reason, I just hate to open the last bottle in a case and as a result, I have one bottle each of about 40 or 50 wines that should have been opened 20 years ago!

I have '74 Ridge Zins and Bordeaux from '64 through '75 that I should have finished off by now. Some of the wines I kept becuase their vintage coincided with important dates: I was married in '61 (a great year!); my kids were born in '68 (a terrible year) and '71 (great year in Burgundy).

And so I have some antiques!

I will be opening some of these, especially the old Ridge Zins in the next few months.
