OT: What it all means?

Apropos of the recent goings-on in this ng, I thought it might be amusing and/or interesting to some to read this Usenet-related rant:

that a friend (a long-time Usenet veteran) recently pointed out to me. In particular, this excerpt resonated with me: "I didn't read any of that in a newsgroup. And yet it all came out of posts, and the people behind them, and the interaction with them, and the conversations that came later, and the plane trips across the country to meet people I otherwise never would have known existed."

I have to admit, Mark, the recent troll-fest in the ng has been getting me down. Have not even wanted to post. But I figure this too shall pass, right?

Just ignore them. That is usually the best thing to do.

I personally find them disappointing more than anything. They don't make trolls like they used to.

Despair not, Emily, and employ a bozo filter if needed. Also, you can do what I do and salve your misery with a bottle of 2003 Mauritiushof GV Federspiel Axpoint, which tonight showed a touch of petillance and a very delicate and delicious character.

All I can say, at this point, is that the only time I know when a troll has posted here is when someone who's not in my kill file responds to one of them. The kill file works, folks. You can't even be tempted to respond to a post if you never see it in the first place. Now..... if no one would respond to them at all, we'd be talking about the 'sound of one hand clapping' or that old 'bear in the woods' and whatever it is or isn't doing. Or, better...... we wouldn't be talking about it at all.

What troll fest?

Seriously folks, whenever I see an obvious and silly troll, I complain to their ISP and then kill file them. I really do most earnestly commend to you to do the same. In my offline reader it's of astounding simplicity. You set up the parameters (delete, all newsgroup and anything else you fancy and save that setting). Then when y oare reading the messages and an offender pops up, you press CTRL-K and answer "filter now". And that's it they're deleted and all future posts go the same way.

Actually what I find rather sad is the lack of humour that the trolls display. I mean if they were funny and witty, at least it would add a measure of levity; it is the lack of intelligence in their postings that gets to me.

I had to hit the stronger stuff: opened a bottle of the 2001 Donabaum GV Spitzer Point Reserve. With that touch of botrytis, it's a real mouthful. Consoled myself with that and some chopped chicken livers. Comfort foods!

I read this ng in google groups, so I just have to wade through the muck. It's easy enough to ignore what you don't want to read, though. It was just becoming rampant lately.

Not in my Outlook Express 6... With me it is: mark the message, click 'message' in menu line and select 'block sender'. Anders
