There are dozens of important grapes used to make both red and white wines around the world, and many more that are not often used for wine.
Three important grapes for red wine are Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel.
Three important grapes for white wines are Chardonnay, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc.
Sometimes red grapes are made into white wines. Most of the red color in most red grapes is in the skin. If the grapes are pressed at once and separated from the skins before fermentation, you get a white wine. For example, Pinot Noir is used in this way to make Champagne.
If you want to see long lists and descriptions of grapes used to make wine, pick up a copy of Hugh Johnson's Pocket Encyclopedia of Wine Book
2005 and look near the front of the book for the lists. Also many wines are described, often including what grapes are used to make them.Reply to snipped-for-privacy@cwdjr.net .
