Would anyone have some recommendations for Sardegna - vineries accessible by public transport, types of wines which are unique to the island (I hear that they have a DOCG now), etc.? General recommendations on food/ drink/ places to see would also be welcome.
Not much in the way of public transport. I would recommend the cooperative at Santadi (NW of Cagliari) for top wines of the island, or the Argiolas winery (NE of Cagliari)
Lots of good places to eat, try Da Riccardo in Magomadas, on the west coast.

and look up the Osterie d'Italia, select Sardinia and then select the province you are in, you'll get great adresses for places to eat very good traditional food at under 25 Euro. Also places to find wine and food.
Another interesting cooperative is the "cantina sociale di Tempo Pausania", good chunky red "Dolmen", glorious Vermentino "Canayli".
Another big player is Sella & Mosca near Alghero, the winery is impressive, but - even if it is supposed to be open to the public on certain days - you do not feel really welcome (although my experience dates back to 1998 and this might have changed since!).
I can only support Mike in recommending Argiolas. If you phone a few days ahead, they will do their utmost to show you around.
Having returned from holidaying around Porto Cervo this summer, I would recommend the following:
1) Gianni Pedrinelli's restaurant outside Porto Cervo
2) Hotel Cala di Volpe's excellent restaurant, with matching wines and outstanding service
Under no circumstances eat at Hotel Pitrizza - they have replaced their old, "name" chef with their junior chef, and the service under the new Maitre was appalling!
We found all the local wines to be good, although a tad pricey. Argiolas, as a previous poster mentioned was particularly good IIRC.
