Recommendations for Montreal and Quebec City

The only winery was run by an Alsacian gentleman that has since passed away.

Goof restaurants in Montréal include: the excellent Toqué (book a month ahead at least), if Michelin covered Canada this would be *** BU wine bar Pullman wine bar L'Inconnu Laloux

Let us know how it went. Toqué is at prices that for us in Europe are incredible value for money, considering the stratospheric level of the fare offered.

Mike, I don't know if it's a "goof" restaurant, but certainly Au Pied de Cochon has its fans. What's your opinion?

The little place just off the main square? looked way touristy to me. Although many of the restaurants in Quebec City go out of their way to appeal to those in search of a unique experience. Someone, possibly Bill S. has mentioned it before as it has a rather...rich...fare. In fact, it gives new meaning to the phrase "whole hog." In fact, I now recall that it was an NY Times review that I saw:

Hi Mike, We have reservations at Bonaparte (we're staying at Auberge Bonaparte), and we're waiting to hear back from Toqué. They felt certain they could fit us in, though they were going to get back to us about the time. I might give Au Pied a Cochon a call later today.

Mike, Toqué did turn out to be pretty incredible and was the meal of the trip. Perhaps one of the best meals I've ever had. We did the recommended wine choices with each course. As this was a blind tasting the wines were picked by the sommelier and poured fairly quickly, I didn't get a chance to record most of the selections. The WOTN for me was a 2001 Barolo by Mauro Molino (sp?).

We never did get to Au Pied a Cochon but did have a meal in Le Cochon Dingue, a chain that served excellent mussels and ribs.

We also had an excellent meal at Bonaparte in Montreal, and Panache in Quebec City. Panache was also a tasting menu and was included in our stay.

Most of our other wines were ordered by the glass with our meals and none really stood out as exceptional, though most were adequate.

The trip was a great mix of museums, churches, fireworks, wine and food. A very nice vacation.
