I've heard that statistic before (which certainly doesn't mean that it's necessarily true) and can rationalize it with the related fact that >95% of all wine purchased is drunk within 24 hours of purchase. I think that women are less fearful of appearing ignorant when buying wine (just like asking for directions) and so are more willing to pick up a few bottles for dinnertime consumption. Likewise, fewer women like beer than men do, so are more likely to tun to wine as an alternative beverage. OTOH, as evidenced by this group, men are more likely to become obsessive/compulsive wine "geeks." ;-)
