First, where are you writing from? If in the US and you live in a state that allows direct mailing, you can order a Shloss Koblenz Blaufrankisch Ausbruch (sweet Hungarian red) For $8 US from Binny's Beverage Depot (Binnys.com). Also, Charles Spinnetta in Amador county CA. makes a short fermentation Zinfandel called "Zinetta". Hope this helps. Cheers!

Just for your info that is Egervin and Eger, Bgervin would be unpronouncable EVEN for hungarians (;-)))

Means Merlot from Mátraaly, just south of the town of Eger, famous for its Bull's Blood. I can't say this is a wine of much distinction, but if you like it, that's what counts. There aren't too many semisweet reds, the best known (I'm afraid I find it utterly cringe-worthy) is a fizzy from Italy, called Lambrusco.

I've had a late harvest hungarian sweet red from near Rust, and I believe there are a few from Baden in southern Germany.

This wine - drinkable or not (it is not up to me to give an opinion, not having tasted it) - is very strange. "Koblenz" being a well-known city on the affluent of Rhine and Moselle, "Schloss" meaning castle, this would insinuate something like "Chateau Napa Chilean Plonk".

Sorry, but I wouldn't even care to taste such an obvious tentative of fraud.

Try a bottle of Yellowtail Shiraz. I'm not joking. It should be readily available wherever you live and you're not going to be out very much if you don't like it.

To those of you who haven't tried it, please don't flame me. I've never tasted a red table wine quite like it.

This was a wine that I tasted _years_ ago probably 30. It was in the category of "taste - good lord! - forget", so I can't guarantee its exact location. As my memory recalls, it was from beside the Neusiedlersee, right by the Austro-Hungarian border, some 12 km from Sopron and 10 or so from Rust. Of the two towns, which would YOU have felt was better known?

Rust and Sopron (Ödenburg) are only 14 kms apart. If it's in between these towns, Fertörakos (the o not with ¨, but with ") is the only village that comes to my mind. Apart from these, there are only a few hamlets: Sopronpuszta, Piuszpuszta, Köhidtelep, Viragvölgy, Tómalom. Unless you are talking about Balf, Kópháza or Magyarfalva, of course, but then these are south of Sopron.

Yes, look for the bottles with the word "AMABILE" in the name. Usually, it's written in the line just under the name Lambrusco.

Yes, vinifying botrytis reds has come a little "à la mode" over here. I guess it's due to the fact that Alois Kracher, beginning with the fabulous botrytis year of 1995, for the first time bottled a red Trockenbeernauslese (Zweigelt, iirc). When I asked him, why he did that, his disarming reply was: "I know it's not the cream of the crop, but what shuold i do with the grapes - just discard and forget about it?" So that's when red high prädikat wines more or less became "accepted". Alois bottled a red TBA ever since (iirc), and others , like Hammer, follow suit. (The problem with Hammer is their extreme inconsistency: On average, for every one really good wine they botlle, you get another that's so-so, and three to four undrinkable plonky brews.)

Caution: There are two distinct DOCs (and they have been existing for a few years now):

- Recioto della Valpolicella - the sweet version; and

- Amarone della Valpollicalla - the dry version.

"Recioto Amarone" is only to be found on older bottles.

And another "lord" between the sweet reds is Aleatico. Check out the Aleatico Antinori, it's fantastic.

Also Malvasia di Casorzo d' Asti or Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco as well as Brachetto (d'Aqui) from Piedmont are sweet reds, Gilli's MCDB is very good in particular. Exported by DeGrazia. Banfi does the Brachetto well.

Joe, I agree the Banfi Brachetto d'Aqui (Rosa Regale) is a tasty fun drink. My only objection is the price ($20). Not all wine needs to be "serious", but for my money anything over $10-12 better be! Dale
