syrah as table grapes

My local kick-ass produce stand (run by Larry, the same Larry as in

) had some obviously red-wine grapes for sale today with all the other produce (like onions and bell peppers and stuff like that).

Larry told me he picked too much Syrah, and these were left-overs. Gawd they were sweet. I *knew* they would be, but they *were*. To be fair, a couple of kids said they were sour. Kids! What do they know? I didn't chew the seeds to see if they tasted like almonds, a trick suggested to me by Josh Chandler, the brilliant Pinot Noir maker at Lazy Creek. Maybe I'll go back tomorrow to Larry's. It's

10 minutes from here.

I *did* snag a couple of crop-circle tee-shirts. Larry is not only a great farmer, he's got a sense of humor when people were trampling his wheat field.

Anyway, next time someone says ripe wine grapes are sweet... they're right.

I'm surprised you haven't tasted them all given your proximity to Napa. I've had Mourvedre, Zinfandel, Grenache (Noir), and Counoise off the All were tasty and reminiscent of the wine they make, especially the zinfandel. I have never had white wine grapes off the vine, though. I hope to remedy that in about 2 weeks. Have you?

Wine grapes .......AHHHHH the memories:)

Used to golf alot in the Calistoga/Napa area. Fairways surrounded by vineyards. Slicing is a good thing. Looking for your ball among the vines if wonderful. Wine grapes almost make buying grocery grapes a travesty :)

I don't think I've ever had a wine grape.

I'd like to find a place that has loads of different produce. The normal supermarkets usually have one of each when there's literally dozens of variety of each fruit and vegetable.

He does need to re-coup his losses from the crops those kids destroyed.

There's got to be enough sugar for wine-making.

I would have thought that skin thickness would be the major objection.

Nevertheless, cinsault is an exception, it makes a truly excellent table grape.

Some table grapes make great wine. Chasselas comes to mind (it is a vinifera).
