I will be in Tasmania next month (Side note to St. Helier- I am getting closer to NZ all the time) Just wondering what should I be on the look out for wine wise. Will be going from Hobart across to Strahan and up to Devonport so not wine country per se, but would like to order up some nikce local product.

Pedantic point: is Tasmania any closer to NZ than is Sydney? There can't be much in it!

There seems to be quite a bit of wine in Tasmania, but I have never tasted any. Perhaps the references given below will help you select a good Tasmanian wine to go with roast Tasmanian Devil :-) .

NOd to the pendant. You are most likely right I was thinking of the southern dimension with Wellington south of Canberra that I forgot about the notherliness of the North island entrely. (Now I am going to get it from his lordship!)
I had an excellent time visiting Tamar Ridge and Bay of Fires. Both had some very nice cooler climate Rieslings, Pinot Gris and Gewurz, and decent Pinot. Tamar Ridge had some great later-harvested Rieslings too, so definitely worth exploring. Just avoid anything with Cab or Merlot on the label, I remember those all being awfully green and vegetal.
Pirie, Wellington, Frogmore Creek and Stefano Lubiana are also worth a look. I tasted wines from them at the 'Taste of Tasmania' festival I'd attended in Hobart, and was generally impressed.
Salil PS: If you go to Bay of Fires' very nice cellar door, make sure you sample the Arras. Easily the finest sparkling wine I've ever had outside of Champagne.
Tasmania. Cool climate. Look for great Rieslings, Fantastic Pinot Noirs, lovely bubblies. Near Hobart, Stefano Lubiana North Tas, Piper's Brook. And anyone else you find. Report, please! (I just drank a Pipers Brook Pinot with Chinese dinner. Fabulous!)
