Michael, Ian, why is this? Any other wine obey this rule (Porto?)? What about other sweet wines?

Sorry Mike, all I can says that this is common wisdom on the island.

One house, d'Oliveiras, even gives an extra T-top stopper cork with every vintage dated bottle, recommending using this after opening and pulling the original full-size cork.
