[TN] '08 Kokomo Cab Franc

With tonight's dinner of roast chicken, corn and an assortment of cold salads (the current glut of fresh veggies has spurred us to create them), I opened:

2008 Kokomo Cabernet Franc 'Pedroni Vineyard' Dry Creek Valley nose: slightly tarry, red berry fruit palate: ripe, soft tannins, low acid, somewhat glossy finish

Back story: Jean bought this wine in our favorite butcher shop after the wine buyer (aka the butcher and fishmonger) touted it as the winner of the recent Indianapolis International Wine Competition (or something like that). Without high hopes, we gave it a shot tonight and we somewhat favorably surprised. The oak treatment was very much in the background on this wine and it had just enough Cab Franc character, albeit in a very ripe package, to make it interesting. This wine also avoided the overly ripe, overextracted mold of winemaking so prevalent in California these days. Overall, I can see why it won that competition: it's a crowd pleaser with enough character to keep it from being flat out boring. And, yes, the name Kokomo does refer to the town in Indiana as the winemaker is a Purdue graduate. The story is here:
