TN: 1970 Ch. Mouton Baron Philippe

One owner wine, never raced or wrecked... Bought on release as a sort of experiment in second wines in good years. Fill was just under the top of the shoulder, cork all wet - slid into the bottle as I attempted extraction. Decanted an hour. Brick rim, but lots of blue in the body. gentle but present tannins, plenty of acid to go with the NY steaks. Dark plum flavours with a hint of barnyard, long finish. Rich. Tellingly, the Munson Shaw lable indicated 11.5% alchohol. I wish the "modern" stylists would take a hint.

Thanks for the notes. Perhaps Mouton's muscular style lends itself to long aging of even it's "second" wine. Too bad Cadet doen'st hold up as well!

-------- Didn't Mouton Baron Phillipe become Ch. Armailhac, a 5th growth, sometime in the 80s? Graham
