TN DRC Richebourg 1970

The 1970 DRC Richebourg, bottle 009632, had a good fill. The cork was holding, but it crumbled, and it took quite a while using several tools to extract it in pieces without cork crumbs falling into the bottle. I have a few bottles of all of the red DRC wines from 1970, and have started tasting all of them again. I reported on La Tache here about a year ago, and it still was holding well.

This wine still had fairly good medium color with some age showing around the rim. There was no oxidation apparent. It does not have the intensity and complexity of the best years, but still shows well. There is still cherry and dark fruit with some spice complexity. The tannins are now light and slightly dry. There is plenty of clean acid. The aftertaste is medium. While not quite as complex and intense as the 1970 La Tache reported last year, it is not very far behind. For the most part, the 1970 red Burgundy wines were a bit light and most of them now are far too old. However DRC, Leroy, and sometimes a few others can make good wines in such a year that age well. The 1970s were not the best years for much red Burgundy, with the exception of

1978 which produced some very great wines.

Thanks for the note. I have exactly one bottle of 1970 Burgundy in my cellar and it's a DRC Richebourg. I fear the provenance on my bottle since it was gifted to me years ago by a lawyer who obtained the bottle from an estate that he probated. I have a feeling it was a "top of the fridge wine rack" wine so I never expected much. I'll open mine soon and report on the results.
