TN: 1996 Guigal Cote Rotie Chateau D' Ampuis

A knockout.

Huge, chewy, smoky, meaty, full bodied juice with aromas of grilled meat, very mild tannins, and anyone who has tried this and smoked pot or hash at some time in their prior life will notice a hint of THC on the finish! You won't find "marijuana" used to describe a wine very often!

I usually write my notes and then check Parker's review, and his description is more accurate, with which I agree: "copious quantities of bacon fat, black pepper, cassis, raspberry and toasty oak, not very concentrated or structured, it is silky-textured, round, evolved, and forward" from a 10/99 review. In 2/01 he wrote "sadly, there are only 23,000 bottles of the outstanding [wine], dark ruby/purple color, intense nose of tapenade*, dried herbs, licorice, leather, and black currants, layered supply finish".

It was a perfect match with broiled filet mignon (grille was broken), and they turned out fine too surprisingly.

*I had to look that one up - "A spread of Provençal origin consisting of capers, black olives, and anchovies puréed with olive oil." Sounds good. I need some kirsch to go with that.

I don't know from personal experience, but Parker indicates they are certainly worth it.

I had one recently, and I admit it was absolutely fantastic together with filet of lamb fresh from the Weber. Now I am looking forward to try the 95,97,98 and 99, still resting in the cellar ;-)))

Anders

You are lucky. The 2000s are supposed to be phenomenal as well.

But is it released yet?. It's not sold anywhere here in Denmark, as far as I know................

Anders

Good question; off the top of my head I do not know. I think Guigal ages them in new oak for 30 months before release, so the 2000s should be out by now. But for the stupid blue sky laws here that close the liquor shops on Sundays, I could run up the street a few blocks and check! Will try tomorrow.

Tapenade is very good with Ranico (Swedish apple wine in a Southern French style).

I checked the wine store today (reference earlier question from Anders) and the 2000s should be out soon-

thanks Kirk, it should be available soon here as well I guess.........

You're welcome - let's get some price checks from others - the wine shop I use frequently here in downtown Colorado Springs has the 98 D' Ampuis for $104 a bottle - the 96 I got from there last March was about $80.

Hi Anders

I lurk here quite often but don't normally contribute. However I notice that you mention you've got some 99 Ampuis in your cellar. Just thought you might be interested in a tasting note I did from a recent tasting of Guigal wines I attended. The tasting included several of his top 99's. The d'Ampuis was lovely. It had a dark purple/ruby core with a ruby rim. On the nose it was fantastically intense with complex aromas of black and red fruits (especially cherries), floral notes including violets and lavender, herbs and a hint of what I describe as furniture polish! The new oak aroma was quite noticable but unlike some at the tasting who thought it too prevelent I found it very pleasant.

On the palate it was silky, had beautifully balanced acidity and ripe tannins. Rich ripe fruit balanced the obvious but again very pleasant new oak flavours. Dark chocolate, black olives and mocha were all present adding to the wonderful taste sensation. It was a beautiful wine with a long life ahead of it. And do I envy those who have some in their cellar!

Regards

Siobhan

I bought two cases of the 1999 Ampuis but had to return them both since all 24 bottles had pushed up corks and wine had leaked all over the bottles indicating exposure to high temps in shipping. At that price I didn't wasnt to take a chance. Every case that the distributor had was in the same shape. Bi!!

Your notes and impressions are wonderfully articulated; you should contribute more and lurk less!
