[TN] '99 Rosenblum Zin

With a dinner tonight of takeout BBQ ribs, Jean and I both felt the need for a Zin, so she brought up:

1999 Rosenblum "Eagle Point" Zinfandel (14.3% ABV) nose: overripe plums, tar, cedar palate: thick, soft, plummy fruit, tar

When I first tasted it blind, it seemed quite overripe and big, but as time went on it calmed down, became a bit more acidic and balanced and lost most of those early overripe notes. After so many Ridge Zins in recent years, this wine just seems a bit unbalanced, but all in all it's quite a decent Zin and just fine with our ribs.

That is a problem I see in Rosenblum more than other producers. One of my favorites of theirs is the Paso Robles Appelation Zindfandel. Some years it is wonderful but many years it is way out of alcohol or sugar balance.

Probably the reason I stopped buying Zin a fw years ago is that they all seemed to be moving towards that big overripe style. Rosenblum is nowmaking over twenty different zins and fifty different wines and I would guess that it would be hard to focus on quality with so many labels/vineyard designations but they seem to do it better than most.
