TN: champagne, CdP

NV Larmandier-Bernier Blanc de Blancs, Premier Cru. With hors d'oeuvres and (rather good if I say so myself) salad of mesclun with artichokes, sun dried tomatoes, braised peppers, shrimp and balsamic. Lovely and lean, quite long but at the same time light, fine balance of lemon rind with green apple and even a little seaweed. Unusually good at the price.

93 CdP Roger Perrin, mag. With roast boneless venison gigot, sweet onion relish, cranberry sauce, small ratte pan fried potatoes, snow peas. A lovely old lady but with a musty nose (like some other old ladies I've known!) that one person found disagreeable. Very feminine, maybe a bit leaner than a few years ago, hardly any tannins left so a little challenging for the biche. But still full of nice soft fruit. Almost more like an older claret than a CdP. Fitting end for the vintage.

Emery, We've also really liked what we've had from Larmandier-Bernier. At a higher price, they make a non-dosage "Terre de Vertus" that can be really stunning (if a bit austere).

Wow! I long ago drank up what few '93s I owned. Good on you hanging on to this as long as you did. The food sounds scrumptious, too.

Following MT's comment in another thread re lean, I use it here in sense of muscular, not at all pejorative. Guess I'm not French! :) We really did like it a lot. Biodynamic, too, apparently! ;)

Like I said, the last of the vintage for us, but worth waiting for. Some of the wines were sleepers, the Coulon kept quite well too.

Food was good but I overcooked the biche. More's the pity. Still, since our dog was attacked -- and injured quite badly -- by a pack of hunting dogs, we have been showered with the choicest cuts. So there will be other opportunities, although I hate messing up with guests. This darn Paris dual micro-convection-rotation-programmable... (retreats muttering).
