TN:Gaja Costa Russi 1997

I had dinner last night with an Italian winemaker from Tenuta de Trinoro. I roasted a wild venison tenderloin with morel mushrooms and opened a bottle of 1997 Gaja Costa Russi Langhe Nebbiolo. I haven't touched these since I purchased them on release but I did taste the wine at a tasting a few years age. The wine is a very dark, deep, opaque purple in the glass. It's quite rich and clings to the sides of the glass. The nose is of crushed blackberry, anise, and the usual Nebbiolo tar and roses. This wine is certainly Nebbiolo on steroids as it is huge on the palate with sweet ripe black fruits, black cherries and currants. It's mouth coating and rich on the palate with a finish that lingers for minutes and tannins that are smooth as silk. I like it! A+
