I bought a few bottles of Henry Lamarche's 1971 La Grande Rue and of Grands Echezeaux shortly after release, and the wines have been properly stored. Lamarche's wines seemed to be honest Burgundy back then, but some critics of that era considered them a bit rustic. Since that time the domain has come under the control of the next generation, and I believe the tiny La Grande Rue vineyard was elevated to grand Cru several years ago. I have not had experience with the newer Lamarche wines, but some consider them improved over those of the 70s era.
It should be noted that 1971 in much of Burgundy produced wines from awful to great. The weather was not ideal. There were severe hail storms in some vineyards and not in others close by. For those who had had hail and did not remove the damaged grapes, there often was a faint taste of rot in some wines that usually have a good reputation, and quite a few of these turned brown fairly early. This was a year when you could not go by past reputation, and you had to consider wines one by one. Many of even the top wines of the vintage were rather light in color at first, but some developed more intense color with age. The acid level in many of the wines was higher than usual.
The fill on the Grands Echezeaux was good and the cork was sound, although rather soft now. The color was rather light with some light brick around the rim. The fruit was rather intense, more on the strawberry, red cherry side than on the dark fruit side. There was plenty of acid, but not excessive. Tannins were resolved and not very apparent. There was no oxidation apparent. Although not a top wine, it was very good and has held very well. It lacked some of the complexity and exotic spice of the best examples. This was my last bottle.
