TN Scharzhofberger Auslese 1971 - Egon Muller

The wine is Scharzhofberger Auslese 1971, Egon Muller A.P Nr. 3567

142-48-72. It has been stored properly since release, the cork was sound, and there was very little ullage. It is of course a Riesling, although as common in the early 70s, this is not stated on the bottle because everyone knew that the top wines from MSR were Riesling.

The color is golden with a hint of old gold and orange. It is still holding very well, which comes as no surprise for a top late harvest Riesling from Egon Muller's portion of Scharzhofberg. The year 1971 did not produce as many late harvest wines as 1976, but the well made wines had very good balance from dry wines to TBA. There is some old Riesling petrol character now, but it is clean and not excessive. Words that come to mind are apricot, yellow peach, and a touch of honey. The wine is quite rich and sweet, but well balanced with acidity. A nice smoothness has developed with age. The finish is very long. I rate this wine very highly.
