With roast chicken , the 2000 Ch. Lanessan 2000 (Haut Médoc). Very rich, with dark berry fruit, a hint of coffee, and some spice. Oak is noticable but not intrusive. Medium-bodied with some ripe tannins. Pleasant enough to drink now with a little air, but a few years cellaring seem to be in order. B+
With a pasta with spinach/mushroom/lemon/cream sauce I probably should have looked for an Italian white, but opened a 2001 Hirsch Heiligenstein Grüner Veltliner (Kamptal). And was glad I did. Great acidic crispness, nose of flowers and pineapple. In the mouth green apple meets lime fruit. Fruit is ripe enough it comes off as sweet, but it's a dry wine. Lots of body for a $14 white. Good mineral finish. B+/A-
Grade disclaimer: I'm a pretty easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Dale
