TN Wachenheimer Gerumpel Riesling Auslese 1976, Burklin-Wolf

The wine is Wachenheimer Gerumpel Riesling Auslese 1976, Dr. Burklin-Wolf, A.P. Nr. 5 142 043 8277, Goldene Kammerpreismunze Weinpramiierung 1978, Landwirtschaftskammer Rheinland/Pfalz. The bottle had been stored properly since release, the fill was good, and the cork was in sound condition.

This is yet another top 76 Auslese in the large, very ripe 76 style. There is considerable petrol, but it is clean. The color is full golden. The wine is very rich and sweet, but there is plenty of acidity to balance. I am reminded more of stone fruit such as yellow peaches and apricots than of mango and papaya as is the case for some of the 76 late harvest Rieslings. There is also pineapple. The honey character is moderate, but not as over the top as for some 76s. Although very ripe, this wine is a bit more typical of the region than some of the ultra tropical 76 examples. The finish is quite long. This is one of the best few 76 Auslesen from the region that I have tasted. It is holding quite well and could well last many more years.
