TN Wintricher Grosser Herrgott Riesling Beerenauslese 1976

The wine is a 1/2 bottle of Wintricher Grosser Herrgott Riesling Beerenauslese 1976, St. Stephanus Winzergenossenschuft, A.P. Nr. 2 604

16933 77. The wine was stored properly since release, the cork was sound, and the fill was good.

This is the only wine I have ever had from this source, so I do not know how it compares with what usually is made there. However this is a very rich BA much in the 1976 ultra-ripe style. The color is very intense gold with some old gold. The bouquet and taste are quite intense. The wine is fully ready and holding well. There is some clean old Riesling petrol, but not excessive. The fruit is mainly of an apricot and yellow peach character with not as much tropical fruit character as some of the 76's. There is considerable floral character of a dry flower nature - pot pourri. The sweetness is great, buy there is enough acid to balance. This wine does not have the extreme intensity and complexity of some of the very top 76s. It tends to be nearly a bit heavy. However it is a very good example, and did not cost nearly as much as some of the stars of the 76 vintage.
