what to spend UKP60 on?

I've got UKP60 from work as a long service reward to spend on wine, which will largely be drunk over the Christmas period.

I'm leaning toward the Sunday Times new member offer which includes (all from Australia) two bottles each of Goulburn Valley Oak-Aged Cabernet Sauvignon 2002, Yaldara Hills Semillon 2002 (South Australia), Forbes Estate Oak-Aged Shiraz 2003 (Victoria), West End Estate No.1 Oak-Aged Chardonnay 2003 (NSW), Dark Corner Oak-Aged Durif 2002 (NSW), Elliston Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2003 (Red Cliffs/Coonawarra).

Total UKP55, plus about a fiver p&p, which they claim is UKP32 off normal prices. On top of that, they're offering an extra three bottles of Barossa Hills Shiraz (worth UKP26.97) for nothing.

According to my sister, who lives in Canberra and is keen on wines, these aren't commonly found in bottle shops there as they are mainly exported.

I've looked at recent online wine recommendations by Malcolm Gluck and Jane McQuitty of The Guardian and Times respectively, and I've also looked at online merchants such as Majestic (there's one near me).

I'll drink almost anything from anywhere, and am keen on shiraz, malbec, pinotage, cab sauv, chardonnay, rioja, sauv blanc, and normally spend between UKP5-10 a bottle.

Any thoughts?

Being the portuguese around here, I must say a word for my country. Why don't you try some portuguese wines. I believe you and your sister wouldn't regreat. Most people around the world don't know them, and when thay try it they tend to appreciate them very much. My generally suggestion goes to Alentejo region wines. According to the price and type, you may enjoy: Alabastro reserva; Porca de Murca reserva and Alianca Garrafeira (this is from Bairrada region)

I believe you don't find anything there in Australia. But you may buy it over the net and have them sent to you by post:

Bloody hell, congo kid, you don't ask for much.

we have enough trouble sorting out our wines in our own heads.

read Jane M, Jancis R, wine clubs are a bit of a promo only.

you cant go wrong with Majestic and Waitrose IMHO. just read etc..Decanter mag is worth the money.

Coincidentally, a friend mentioned yesterday that his local wine supplier (Dallas in Ealing, London - strongly recommended a new Portuguese wine, which I'll probably taste soon. Don't know which one it is yet.

I regard it as a bad sign that I've only heard of one of the labels here - Westend is OK but their reds and stickies are of more interest. The others look like a way of fobbing ordinaire wine onto foreigners.
