Kiddies will be in tow, so no 3 star recs please. ;)

I enjoyed my visit to the office of diffusion in Beaune. It was fun to get to taste so many great Burgundies for so little money, especially in the last room that has the truly great ones. I suspect Lord St. Helier knows more than I do on this subject.

On our way home from Catalunia (Priorat - uhmmm) we did a stop in Bourgogne and had a very tasty Coq Au Vin in a small and cosy reataurant opposite Hospice de Baune. They serve on the footway outside (nice look at Hotel Dieu). It's unpretentious an the prices (also regarding the wines) are reasonable.

Less comercial bottles in Beaune? Pass! ;-)

Oh yes - the name of the restaurent is 'Dame Tartine'. I guess You could find it on Google.

  1. Cave Madeleine, on the Pl Madeleine. Guy who runs it confirmed wine nutcase who knows all the little-known producers and once insisted I should get the less expensive wine with my dessert, even though I insisted. Good food, tending towards the robust. Book in advance. tel +33 380 22 93 30
  2. Ma Cuisine. The dream of what you'd hope a bistrot should be like. Do the Yquem vertical while you're at it. Very good food, and a wine list that contains both luxury stuff and sensibly priced ones (tip: Lucien JAcob's Gevrey Chambertin). Also fair amount of non-Bourgs. Advance booking _essential_.+33 380 22 30 22

Beaune is full of good restaurants, you won't have any trouble finding some. We have a few favorites - but they would not be good recommends for kids. There are any number of bistros right in town that would be great places to dine with the kids, as the kids can get up and raom around.

As for wine, Beaune is maybe THE wine town of the world. Personally though, I don't buy my wine right in Beaune. If you're after some top notch wines, and many that are "off the beaten path", drive the few miles south into Puligny Montrachet. Just off the square in town (right next to the litte statue of the vineyard workers) there is a wine cave run by Julien Wallerand - a knowledgable and delightful young man who carries wines from innumerable independent vignerons.

It is also well worth the trouble to make appointments and visit some fo the smaller, independents directly. It's a lot easier / more satisfying to do this if you already know some of the ones you wish to visit - and are pretty certain you intend to buy some wine from them.

Enjoy the trip!

Thanks Nils and others. I will try for Ma Cuisine. Luckily my kids are well behaved enough to not need to get up and run around during dinner! :) (Furiously knocking on wood...) Just don't want to subject them to too much pomp after a long day, simply a great dinner.

Oddly I've been many times on the wine route around Beaune, but never before been within the city walls. So looking forward to the experience. I will probably make a couple of stops on the return trip when we are staying over with a friend in Dijon.

cheers,

If you are comfortable with staying a few km outside Beaune, I'd recommend Golf Colvert in Levernois - small village 3 km east of Beaune. Very quiet, family hotel, fresh and modern building well the service is personal (the kind of place where they make their own marmalade and serve freshly pressed orange juice with the breakfast). No restaurant, garage under video surveillance, double room is aboiut EU 65. If uyou play golf, the hotel is just beside an 18-hole golf course where you get a discount if you stsy in thed hotel. (Apparently, if you play the golf course, you also get a discount at the hotel?!) Tel +33 380 24 78 20

Le Montrachet in Puligny is worth the detour.

I found a nice hotel/restaurant in Saint Romaine. I didn't stay at the hotel, but the food was good and reasonable. I don't remember the name, but it was fairly prominently located on the left side of the road ~ 1KM before you leave the city proper.
