Why Samling 88?

Question

Not to flog a dead horse here, but look at the conflicting information i've gathered:

RE: SCHEUREBE- "resulting from a cross between Silvaner and Riesling. lt carries the name of the former director who led this breeding station for many years."

"Scheurebe (pronounced "shoy ray beh") is another new crossing that is well established in a number of regions. Bred in 1916 in Rheinhessen and named after its breeder, Georg Scheu, it is a crossing of Silvaner and Riesling."

"The Scheurebe grape variety was developed in Germany as a cross of the Riesling and Sylvaner varieties in 1956."

"Sheurebe: Die Sorte entstammt nicht wie bisher angegeben einer Riesling x Silvaner Kreuzung. Riesling konnte als Elternsorte bestätigt werden. Silvaner ist jedoch kein Elternteil und es kann keine der untersuchten Sorten als Elternsorte vorgeschlagen werden. Prof. Scheu hat sich sehr intensiv mit Wildreben befaßt, vermutlich ist eine davon der zweite Elternteil. Leider ging der Großteil dieser Wildrebensammlung im Lauf der Zeit verloren, sodass eine endgültige Klärung unwahrscheinlich erscheint." -which basically translates to: It's not Silvaner.

SO! I'm fine with there being a question about lineage. What I now want to know is why it has the second name of "Samling 88", if indeed it is not the 88th crossing between Riesling and Silvaner.

I know anglophone speakers have problems with the diacritics of umlauts, but note that the correct transcription of "Sämling" would be "Saemling".

"Sämling" is "seedling" (= a plant grown from the pip of a grape, not a technique normally used in breeding new crossings). "88" is just an internal numbering that not necessarily has to do with the

88th trial of this specific crossing. It can be th 88th trial of this year, or designating the place the plant is grown or whatsoever.
