wine bottle punt

I always thought the punt in a wine bottle was there to strengthen the bottle. I was assured that it was to collect sediment instead; by a major bottle producer here in the US (and to help in pouring, but I don't buy that one).

Grammatical errors aside, what gives.

(I would be willing to stand corrected here, but ...)

I thought that the punt is a leftover relic from the days when wine bottles were blown by hand. You push in the bottom of the blown bottle to ensure that it will be able to stand up straight.

As I've heard & read it gives strength to a sparkling wine bottle so that it won't explode, a good Champagne has 4 or more times the pressure inside the bottle as out. Cheers

After Malvern Hill Pres. Lincoln visited with Gens. Mc Clellen & Sumner as well as Col. Nugent (Commander of the Irish Brigade.)` A Lt. James. M. Birmingham, Adjutant of the 88th N. Y. came from a swim in the James R. & with his underwear drying on his body saw them talking. He ducked behind some cover to eavesdrop in time to see & hear Pres. Lincoln (overcome with emotion at the bravery & sacrifice of the Irish Brigade.) as he lifted a corner of the 69th N. Y.'s flag, kissed it & said "God bless this Irish flag" From Joseph Bilby's book "Remember Fontenoy" on the Irish Brigade Lancaster Civil War Round Table Website

Wow, that is quite an explanation. I never realized there were so many plausable explanations for the punt. Thanks for the information. And Happy Holidays.

Within the context of todays usage of the punt, I vote for #7 reason. IOW, it's all about marketing. This has been taken to ridiculous extremes lately. I just heard of a new bottle with a deep punt that weighs 2 kilos _empty_! It must look like a magnum on the shelf, and take two hands to pick up. The glass has to cost well over a dollar apiece.
