This is only sometimes true of older wines. The 88 Duhart Milon we served last night ( a middle-aged claret) did NOT reveal any funky odors when opening (other clarets I have had have had bad odors), but breathing allowed the wine to open up.

I remember very fondly the 1977 California Cabs. That was a drought year. There were a lot of bargains to be had from that vintage. The wines were superb, and *vastly* underrated by the critics at the time.

Me, too, Tom. In addition to Caymus, one of my favorites from that year was the Conn Creek that survived splendidly well into the late 1980s (the '78 Conn Creek Lot 2 was even better, though).
