Yquem to release 2005 in Nebuchednezzars

For the first time ever, Yquem is releasing Nebuchednezzars of the

2005 vintage. This giant bottle size contains 15 L. The recent Brown Derby catalog has them for sale at only US$ 24999.99 per bottle. They are selling single bottles of it for $1099.99. Thus you pay a considerable premium for buying in this giant size. You would need over 100 people to serve each a generous glass, and you could serve well over 200 for a small glass at the end of a meal. I wonder if Yquem will provide a giant corkscrew and loan you a gorilla to open it and pour :-). That bottle will not be much lighter than 2 cases of wine.

If the 2005 turns out as well as the owners expect, I expect this to become a trophy wine that will sell at a very high price at auctions in 20 or 30 years. How many people who admire fine Sauternes serve dinner parties for over 100 people who admire fine wine. Most likely such a bottle will be a show piece in a cellar of a rich collector and be sent to auction up to several times as owners become old or die.

Yquem has sold large bottles in the past, and the largest before this one was 6 L first bottled in that size in 1982.

Sheesh! Even at that price, they play the penny game. I'm buying seven. It's a good thing it wasn't $25,000 because at that price I wouldn't be buying any. :)
