Whenever I get a new batch of grapes, I obviously analyze immediately after crush. But, the hydrometer brix readings are always about 1-2 points above the refractometer, probably due to the solids suspended in the must. Is it legitimate to accept the refractometer readings as accurate?

What does the hydrometer read in distilled water? That may give you an answer. Also , the juice needs to be cleared of solids for the hydometer too.

How would you clear a freshly crushed must of solids? It's not like you can filter it. Putting it through a strainer is about as good as I can get, but even then, there are huge amounts of "solids", which prevent the hydrometer from floating freely.
