Bung go down the hole

So apparently the bung I was sold for a new carboy was slightly too small. I wasn't paying attention and happened to push it through into the carboy. Naturally it's too big to easily remove. Anyone have any idea on how to get it out? It's one of those spongy bungs.. not some sort of rubber like I'm used to.

Ideas?

Well I used a coat hanger that I mangled to pull the one I dropped into my carboy, but that was a ruber one, I don't know how this spongy one would handle something like a coat hanger. Ken

Matt,

Try this: insert the corner of a handkerchief of bandanna a few inches into the carboy and smooth it around the inner surface of the neck. Turn the carboy over so the bung falls into the neck and rests against the cloth. Draw out the cloth, and the bung should come with it.

I've found that you can often just shake them out. Fill the carboy about 1/3 full of water. Turn it upside down (over the tub, or outdoors), and shake it.

Thanks for all the all the ideas... ultimately this is the one that worked!

A piece of rope. Tie a knot and drop it in. It is the worlds oldest trick.
