How to straighten siphon tubing?

Is there a way anyone has found to straighten siphon tubing permanently? The inevitable (or so it seems to me) problem with curvy tubing is that the racking wand is pushed by the torque created by the curved tubing so as to dip towards one side of the demi, thus meaning the lees shield is pretty well sitting in the lees on the first and second racks.

Anyone found a good solution to this?

I don't have any problem with that; I prefer the curved ones and just rack a little above the sediment and tilt the carboy toward the end of the racking. They make solid racking canes that would fit your needs. The place that sells them here is Country Wines. Here is the link so you can get a feel for what I mean. They call is a rigid Syphon Stem. They do break, that is the drawback if there is one.

The one I have doesn't look like these. From the description, it may be like this one:

But I use this and keep the end of the racking cane up high for most of the racking. When it gets nearly done, I manually take over and hold it where I want it, tilting the carboy/bucket slowly to get it all. I don't even use a "lees shield" this way - it's not necessary.

I've gone so far as to tilt the Carboy for the entire racking - placing a 2x4 under one side and having the racking cane go straight to the low point. This seems to have the cane in a nearly vertical position for the racking.

So I'm not the only one frustrated by this?????

I take the tubing and twist-tie it about 1/2" above the bottom of my stirring stick and push that down into the corner of the vat or carboy from which I am racking. Then I put about a 1/2" block of wood on the bottom of the side opposite where the stick is positioned so the vat is tilted in the direction of the stick. I can get almost all of my wine out of the carboy. Seems to work pretty well.

ah! I see. This I have to try! Simple yet I'll bet it works. The stirring stick sticks in the lees while the hose sucks up above it. wow! I like it.

Thanks. DAve
