Girdlers

Have some here in Central Maryland but have no significant damage. If you look at the shoot carefully, you will see a dark line of little holes around the shoot below where it was cut. This is where the eggs are laid. I am not sure when the eggs hatch but you could prune below the eggs and destroy this part of the shoot by burning or other means. I believe cane-girdlers come out at night and hide during the day so if you spray insecticide, the best time to spray would be at night. I just have not gotten up enough gumption to do this myself.

Cane girdlers "supposedly" don't do much damage because the shoots will just recover and keep growing. It's funny how I've never seen them girdle a vine below the fruit consequently , I've never lost any fruit because of them. Never sprayed for them myself and from what I've read they usually worth worring about in MOST cases.
