Glass or Plastic Fermenting Vessels?

Jul 20, 2003 1 Replies

Does anyone who has tried either method have an opinion on whether it is best to use glass or plastic (PET type) fermenting vessels - as I have just purchased two 5 litre vessels made from PET plastic, but have since read that it is best not to ferment in plastic as you can acquire off flavours........

I will do a primary ferment in a food-grade plastic jug, but for a secondary ferment and aging I go with glass. Everything I've read indicates glass is better for the wine in the long-term. You could try 1 gallon glass jugs, they are not that expensive around here - $2 a piece. Darlene
