Anyone have suggestions for making labels? I'm thinking of software that might be suitable for designing and printing your own label? I have a chokecherry from last year and now have apple and a rhubarb on the go. It would be nice to have something a little more presentable than masking tape!
I use Avery Labelmaker, which lets you do a nice job and has the various Avery label sizes & shapes preconfigured for printing. I print a "six to a page" size onto plain parchment paper, cut them on a paper board and adhere them with a common glue stick. My inkjet printer's ink doesn't run if the label gets wet, but some do, and people will give those a quick spray of clear lacquer. Label removal is a snap, though the really soluble glue sticks don't hold well if you immerse a bottle.
I used PhotoImpact (any photo program will do it). I added text and a nice picture and it looks great. Be sure to use a waterbase glue stick to affix the labels. Usinf Avery or other preglued labels will mean a lot of work ghetting the labels off later on.
I use the paint program that comes with Microsoft Windows. I click on any JPEG picture of my choice, which is usually one by Boris Vallejo, and using the Text mode you can write directly on the photo itself. Save it with any name of your choice for later recovery. I then open it with Microsoft Word so I can get the height and width to my liking. I can ususally paste two labels on the same page (8.5in x 11in) Anyway, it works really well for me. There are label programs on the market if you itching to spend your hard earned bucks. But first, try this, I think you'll like it. Oh, if you don't want a picture on your label you can just use Microsoft Word to type anything ya want. Hope this helps. I can send you a couple of labels I've made to show you what is possible if ya like.
I just use MSWord with a table set for six labels per page. If you own Word you can download loads of free clipart from dgl.microsoft.com. I find this really good (for my low artistic abilities). If you would like a copy of my template I can email it to you.
